B. Akerlund, a Swedish style maven who headed to the United States at the ripe young age of 14, has dressed everyone from Madonna and Lady Gaga to Rihanna and Blondie. Her whimsical take on fashion makes clothing look like art—so we had to know where she gets her good taste (and what she eats to fuel her self-proclaimed fashion activism).

Age: 40

Day job: Fashion activist

What you’d do if you weren’t doing your day job: Play dress up

One food or drink you couldn’t live without: Green juice

What do you have great taste in? Everything from A to Z

What do you have bad taste in? People sometimes. I am a good-hearted person and it always don’t work out.

Who, to you, is an influential tastemaker, and why? My children Billie and Eddie, because they always bring innovative ideas and have a fresh perspective on things.

How do you expand and refine your sense of taste? Research! I am a research freak.

What is the best-tasting thing you’ve ever eaten? Grandma’s home cooking.

What does taste mean to you? Life. I am a visual person, and without beauty and art I crumble.
